Jesus reconciles and integrates all things, holding them together as one. Just so, he shows us how not only to be with him but also how to be his presence for others.
Some may think the icon on the OP is of Christ with Mary and Martha. It is, of course, Rublev's rendering of the Holy Trinity -- i.e., the three heavenly visitors who came to Abraham at the oak of Mamre.
Could it be, Martha starts out in her gifting of hospitality and helps, notices Mary and gets distracted and out of the life her gifts usually flow in. While Mary’s gifting, what brings & produces life, is very different? While Martha is preparing food in the kitchen, Mary ‘s attentiveness is pulling “food” from Jesus for all those gathered?
Yes. Mary's gifting is a gift for Martha, as well as everyone else gathered around Jesus. And Martha's gifting is for them, too. Jesus integrates it all. For our good.
