I've never read Augustine. Jane urges us to read him, but I guess I've been put off by his consignment of unbaptised babies to hell and his coming out against universal reconcilation towards the end of his life. How do I get past this?
I hear your concerns, and you know I share them, but so much of Augustine's work is a beautiful witness to God and the love of God. We know David the psalmist committed terrible sins, but that doesn't mean his psalms can't or shouldn't be sung—Jesus sang them. The same goes for Augustine, I would say. Does that help?
As a former student of Jane's I can vouch for the feeling of terror in the face of unknowing, and absolute joy in the face of discovery. Very grateful for this conversation, thanks +Chris.
