I am with Christopher. I am disturbed at the compassionaless way many Christians including preachers speak of certain groups of people, even rejoicing in their destruction. I know this is not across-the-board, but I’ve been in churches where they cheered at the destruction of “those” type of people.

This discussion has helped me push further into the love and compassion of God and how I am to share such love with others. Thank you.

Yes. Remember that line in the Psalm 138:4: you increased my strength within me? That's the strength of self-control, the strength to bear the cross. But the powers, the gods of this world, the gods that are driving us to fight their wars for them, fill us with *their* strength, which takes us out of control, dehumanizing us and making us dehumanizes others, those whom they've pressed us to attack. I think that's what we're seeing when we see other cheering destruction.

I agree completely. I was raised in a Southern Baptist church and I love everyone there dearly. somehow though I often felt out of sync of some things they would say, but I thought it was just me being weird. There is a lot of "us" versus "them." I don't like it. It grieves me. I don't understand any of these things like Dr. Green does, I just know that the thought of rejoicing in someone losing just so I could win is awful. I don't have the language for it, but I know the biggest problem I have with an eternal hell would be if there were actually people there. Grief and hurt and the feeling of thinking what I was being taught wasn't the love of Jesus brought me here. Many thanks for being a part of this discussion.

Months late but this discussion was absolutely incredible. I am a very new Christian and have mostly been exposed to reformed ways of approaching scripture and the way you talk about it is absolutely mind blowing to me. Can feel myself showing my ignorance with this question, but how do you learn to read scripture this way? Just a lifetime of reading and study? Are there specific books or teachers that were helpful to you?
