Thank you, Bishop Chris and Zoe, for your thoughts and ruminations on Mary especially the tears and vulnerability about the sorrow latent in Mary's story and our own. I appreciate this because I find myself at a time of reckoning with the sorrow in my life as well as that of the world's, of simply living.
I've been struck this advent by the fact that Jesus came as a baby, that when we most need God to help, to intervene, he shows up as a helpless baby that needs to be saved. Your words on Jesus teaching Mary in the manner that he shows up give another layer to dwell on in Christ's incarnation.
There may be a reason Jesus included mourning in the beatitudes.
When I was around 21 and newly returned to faith I felt drawn to Mary. I asked the women I met once a week if we could study Mary. The study guide we used left me feeling like she was boring which didn’t square up with the way people in other traditions revered her. I have grown to love her thanks to contact with better theology along life’s way. Listening to you two almost 30 years after my initial instinct was a great joy. Thank you!
