In Matthew’s Gospel, Mary is “found to be with child” (Mt 1.18). The Lord’s angel comes to Joseph in a dream with a word of reassurance: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife…” (Mt 1.20). In Luke’s Gospel, the angel comes directly to Mary (Lk 1.26-28):
