I’ve been reading Nouwen’s letters, which are, unsurprisingly, a treasure. I love his touch as a writer, the unpretentious of his questions and answers, the quiet earnestness of his advice, which never, or almost never, becomes too earnest. I’m particularly struck by the cleanness of his responses to criticism. Take this one for example:
